Agriculture and commercial centre, characteristic for its territory dotted with "Trulli" and vineyards, Locorotondo dominates the Itria valley with its territory of 4700 hectares. Called, at the origin, "Casal S. Giorgio", its name was changed before in "Casal Rotondo", then in "Luogo Rotondo" and at the end in "Locorotondo" ( from the Latin "locus rotondus") for its ring shape. Locorotondo was born thanks to the will of Goffedro, earl of Conversano, who wanted to aggregate, in 1806, to the Abbey of S. Stephen of Monopoli same churches and various farm house, among which there was the one of S. Giorgio.

In 1500 Locorotondo became domain of the baron Ottavio Loffredo; in 1645 the barony was acquired by the duke of Martina , Francesco Caracciolo. In 1816, the hostile relationship between the Caracciolo( family to which the community of Martina refer to) and the inhabitants of Locorotondo, was solved thanks to Venanzio Montanaro, who rebuilt the mother church and the hospital. Another very interesting monument from an historic-architectonic point is the church of the "Madonna della Greca", declared national monument. We would like to remember same of the most beautiful places to visit: the districts "San Marco", "Trito", "Tagaro", "Serra"; the villa Basile-Caramia, the palace De Bernardis, the town villa, the older trullo of the district "Marzialla", the suggestive zone of "Zuzł" and the historic centre.

Besides the important date of the patronal festival of S.Rocco (from 16th august), from June to October, the country of Locorotondo became the centre of numerous dates with fun and the tasting of the best typical gastronomy. One can taste the roasted suffocated roulade with the best wine of the Itria valley. All these completes the harmony which you could breath in the country of Locorotondo, a zone which join history, tradition and present cultur. There is a curiosity to remember: LOCOROTONDO is in the Guinness because is the only town in the world with a name with 5 letters O. .
